Probably an apt title for Salinger's dealings with the opposite sex as well! One has to pity him with that nitwit Joyce Maynard, but at the same time it's so damn typical of "successful" men who think they can date a woman 30-40 yrs younger and then can't fathom how the relationship failed!

That novel was originally titled, "Are You Banging Your Head Against a Wall?" That man knew titles.
It would be an apt one for describing my experience with men.
